The Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (also known as the "South China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission" and the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area International Arbitration Center", hereinafter referred to as the "SCIA") was established in 1983. It is the first arbitration institution in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region. It epitomizes China's reform and opening-up, the development of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SEZ), and the collaboration between Chinese mainland, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR. In 1984, SCIA pioneered the engagement of foreign arbitrators, and in 1989, SCIA set a precedent for Chinese arbitration awards to be recognized and enforced abroad in accordance with the New York Convention. In 2012, SCIA pioneered to establish a statutory body governance mechanism and a corporate governance structure with an international Council serving as the decision body. As of now, the parties involved in arbitration cases has covered 143 countries and regions, the panel arbitrators covering 129 countries and regions. The total amount of disputes in arbitration cases accepted in 2024 exceeds 142.2 billion yuan. In the "2025 International Arbitration Survey Report", Shenzhen was selected as one of the world's top five most preferred arbitration seat, and the SCIA Arbitration Rule was selected as one of the world's top ten most preferred arbitration rules.
