Peter Eigen is the founder of Transparency International (TI), a non-governmental organization promoting transparency and accountability in international development. From 1993 to 2005, he served as Chair of TI and later as Chair of its Advisory Council.
From 2006 to 2011, he was the Founding Chair of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
In August 2014, he co-founded the Berlin Governance Platform and chaired the International Board of its Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) until 2019, the Garment Industries Transparency Initiative (GITI) and the Climate Transparency. He chairs now the Local Electricity Access Program (LEAP).
Peter Eigen worked for 25 years at the World Bank in economic development. He has lectured at the University of Frankfurt, Georgetown University, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University (SAIS), and as Honorary Professor at the Freie Universität Berlin from 2002 to 2011.
In recognition of his leadership in the global fight against corruption, Germany awarded Peter Eigen its Grand Cross of Merit in January 2013. He is also the recipient of the Reader’s Digest “European of the Year” Award (2004) and the Gustav Heinemann Award (2007).
