Dr. Nedal Alchaar is currently the Minister of Economy and Industry in Syria. He previously served as Minister of Economy and Trade and as Chairman of the Higher Investment Council. He was also the Secretary General of AAOIFI, the global standard-setting organization for the Islamic finance industry, representing more than 200 members across 46 countries.
With deep experience in financial markets and institutions, Dr. Alchaar served as Director of Market Performance Analysis at Fannie Mae and as Vice President at Johnson & Higgins in Washington, D.C. He also spent several years as an adjunct professor of Economics and Finance at George Washington University, where he earned his Ph.D. in International Monetary Economics.
A prominent figure in global economic dialogue, Dr. Alchaar has delivered keynote addresses at more than 150 international conferences. He was ranked 8th on Arabian Business magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential Arabs and has been consistently recognized among the world’s 500 Most Influential Muslims by Georgetown University and the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre in Jordan.
In 2006, he received the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Banking Excellence. He has also been nominated twice for the Nobel Prize by several institutions acknowledged by the Nobel Prize Organization, in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of Islamic economics and finance.
Dr. Alchaar is the author of several best-selling and widely respected books on banking and financial markets, including Fundamentals of Banking Operations, Financial Markets, and Economic Inquiries, in addition to numerous scholarly articles on monetary policy and exchange-rate analysis.
