Governance and the Rule of Law: The Singapore Experience Lecture with H.E. the Singaporean Minister for Law

When Singapore gained independence in 1965, it was a tiny, impoverished nation.  There was hardly any local industry to create meaningful jobs. Most of its people were unskilled and illiterate, and the unemployment rate was high. Many lived in unsatisfactory conditions, and did not own their own homes. In previous years, there had been racial riots.

Today, Singapore is still tiny, but it has become a global business and financial centre. It has a dynamic and vibrant economy which provide good jobs and opportunities for its people, a strong and cohesive society where people of different races and religions live in harmony, and a high-quality living environment and home which people are proud to call home.

What role did governance and rule of law play in contributing to this growth? Are they still valid in todays and tomorrow’s world?

Join Singapore Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, Mr K Shanmugam, as he shares about the Singapore experience, and his views on governance and the rule of law.
