Patrick Baeten graduated in law from the University of Ghent and holds an LLM in international law from the University of Louvain-la-Neuve.

He joined ENGIE in 1996 after three years at the Brussels’ bar. Patrick held several senior positions at regional level (general counsel Europe 2006-2015, general counsel Brazil 2019-2021) and at corporate level (chief legal officer competition & regulation 2003-2006, chief legal officer global disputes 2016-2018, chief legal officer for mergers, acquisitions and investments 2021-2023).  

He now serves as EVP and secretary general for BESIX Group, a major Belgo-Egyptian construction group active worldwide, and oversees all governance, compliance and legal affairs for the group.

Patrick is a board member of CEPANI, a Belgian delegate to the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, and has participated to several ICC task forces including, recently, on climate change related disputes and on issues of corruption in international arbitration. He is a regular speaker at international arbitration conferences and occasionally sits as an arbitrator.

Patrick is fluent in English, French and Dutch and has working knowledge of Portuguese.
